Chakrasana, commonly known as Wheel Pose, is also called Rear Deck posed upward. The Sanskrit name “Chakrasana” is derived from the Sanskrit word “chakra” and “asana”, where “chakra” means “wheel” and “asana” means “posture” or “seat”. In Sanskrit, Chakrasana is also known as “Urdhvadhanurasana”. This is a sloping back pose and part of Ashtanga Yoga. Chakrasana increases the flexibility of the spine.

Steps to practice chakrasana (wheel Pose)

  1. Lie comfortably on your back on a yoga mat. Look straight in the ascending direction.
  2. Bend both legs and bend them under your buttock so that the sole of your feet touches the ground. Keep your feet and knees at least 30 cm apart.
  3. Place both hands next to your head and hold them under your shoulders so that your fingers are turning to your legs.
  4. Take a long, deep breath and slowly begin to elevate your body.
  5. Arches your back while lifting the body by supporting the weight of your upper body on the back and the top of your head.
  6. Lift your head and trunk off the ground and straighten your hands and legs as much as possible.
  7. Arque your back as high as possible but do not force. The neck should be relaxed.
  8. Stay in this posture while breathing normally as long as you feel comfortable and slowly return to the floor while exhaling. Slowly lower the body to the ground.

Practice Chakrasana 3 times. Practice before and after a front bending posture.

Precautions for Chakrasana (wheel Pose)

  1. Do not practice Chakrasana directly. You should practice easy postures, such as setubandhasana and other backward asanas as asanas, before practicing Chakrasana.
  2. It should not be practiced by people suffering from illness.
  3. Chakrasana is not suitable for weak people with weak wrists or backs.
  4. Women should avoid practicing chakrasana during pregnancy.
